Taken for a Ride

by Santosh Saligram

What happens when Mr. Baig, a wealthy and entitled tourist expectant of seeing dozens of tigers on his first ever visit to an Indian forest, finds his safari guide and driver struggling to show him even one? ‘Taken for a Ride’, a work in the unusual genre of wildlife fiction, tells a story of disparity, subjugation, and of collateral losses and tragic dichotomies, as it all unfolds over a single safari, derailing the course of several lives, not all of which are human.

A Must Read!
A well written piece of story. Transports one to the corners of forests you might be familiar with. The book highlights all things we experience in a safari. Beautiful written and the narration streams smoothly. Amazing work by author Santosh in capturing and conveying the reality of apathy and empathy one can witness amidst wilderness.

What a Ride!
The novella encompasses a safari ride through the Indian jungle - a atypical typical ride. The writer has done a brilliant job to craft a story, through its myriad messages, description of the environment, colourful (and realistic) characters (both human and animal), and a wonderful endearing ending. While it takes a few pages for the reader to get into the safari jeep, once in, the journey is totally experiential, and makes one feel like she/he is right there (thankfully, sans the dust).

Wonderful Read!
From the vivid descriptions of the forest to the nuances of the characters, this seemingly simple book about a safari ride, beautifully unravels its layers. As a reader passionate about wildlife, it made me reflect upon the reality of Indian wildlife tourism and conservation and the various dichotomies associated. I loved the attention to detail given to the storytelling. For instance, the mention of certain bird species at specific instances felt symbolic. I'd like to read the book again to take good notice of these Easter eggs and the way the story has been crafted! 🙂
